The Biblical Foundation of Healing

From the very beginning, Scripture declares that healing is part of the Creator’s heart. In Genesis 2:17, God tells Adam, “But from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for on the day you eat from it you will surely die.” While not healing in the medical sense, this verse underscores God’s sovereignty over life and health—a theme developed deeply throughout the Old and New Testaments.

Healing in the Old Testament

One of the most revered stories of physical healing in Scripture is found in Exodus 15:26, where God miraculously heals the Israelites after the Red Sea crossing: “The Lord healed the people, and they trusted in the Lord and in his servant Moses.” This passage highlights divine intervention as both a response to need and a means of strengthening faith.

Another powerful example is found in 2 Kings 5, where Naaman, a Syrian military commander suffering from leprosy, finds healing through obedience and faith. In Mark 1:40-42, a man with leprosy reaches out to Jesus and is instantly healed: “He reached out and touched him, saying, ‘I do believe; help me.’ Immediately his skin was cleansed of his leprosy.” This miracle reveals healing as an act of divine grace and a moment when human and divine meet face-to-face.

But the broader scope of healing in Jesus’ message includes emotional and spiritual restoration. In Luke 4:18-19, Jesus reads from Isaiah:
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor… to set the oppressed free…” He declares a healing not only of body, but of broken spirits—a radical restoration that calls all people into wholeness.

The Role of the Holy Spirit in Healing

The New Testament teaches that healing continues through the power of the Holy Spirit.
